Race Camp Week

The Holiday Race Camp at Willard Mountain is a great way to experience racing or tune-up your skiing skills great for ages 7-17. Our experienced coaching staff will help you in all aspects of skiing technique and tactics. We use a variety of free skiing techniques and drills to achieve the best results.

Overview: This 5 day camp is for intermediate or above Skiers. Learn basic alpine racing skills. Specific techniques include Slalom and Giant Slalom gates, progressive drill courses, race timing and mountain skiing. Provided each day will be practice drills, race tactics, techniques and gate training to strengthen and improve your racing abilities. Occasional video analysis will help show, teach, and reinforce individual skills. A fun race on the last day will offer the opportunity to use these skills and turn campers into competitors.

Schedule:
Day 1:
  • 9:30 am - Introductory meeting outside the training center - participants will meet with the camp liaison to review the week's activities, introduce coaches and review guidelines and expectations.
  • 10:00 am -All campers will meet outside the training center, near the chairlift for group organization and preparedness. Campers/racers will be organized in groups based on their age and skill level.
  • 10:00 - 11:00 am Small group instruction will focus on skills. Drills and race techniques will be covered.
  • 11:00 - 12:00 pm Gate training. Athletes will be required to navigate independently up the chairlift. Coaches will provide individual instruction for each racer as they apply skill and techniques taught on the race course.
  • 12:00 - 1:00 pm Lunch - Athletes will be free to go to lunch at 12:00 and return to the mountain at 1:00pm. Parents, Guardians are responsible for their child during this time. Although it is not required athletes are welcomed and encouraged to join other campers in the training center during this time.
  • 1:00 - 2:00 pm Small group instruction will focus on skills. Drills and race techniques will be covered.
  • 2:00 - 3:00 pm Gate training. Athletes will need to be able to navigate up the chairlift independently. Coaches will provide individual instruction for each racer as they apply skill and techniques taught on the race course.


Day 2 - Day 5:
  • 10:00 am - The camp day begins and athletes are to meet outside the training center, near the chairlift for group organization and preparedness.
  • 10:00 - 11:00 am Small group instruction will focus on skills. Drills and race techniques will be covered.
  • 11:00 - 12:00 pm Gate training. Athletes will be required to navigate independently up the chairlift. Coaches will provide individual instruction for each racer as they apply skill and techniques taught on the race course.

Special Events:
Day 5 - All campers/racers are invited to participate in a fun race. This race will be timed and awards and recognition will be given to all participants.

Rules for Athletes:
  • Ski in control at all times
  • Obey all rules and guidelines presented within the Willard Mountains skiers code of conduct.
  • Notify Coaches if you are leaving the group or hill at any time


Minimum Requirement for Participation*:
  1. All campers must be able to handle their own ski equipment independently (i.e., putting on ski boots, carrying equipment, taking skis on and off)
  2. All campers must be able to ride the chairlift on their own.
  3. All campers must be able to care for their own personal hygiene needs (e.g., walking to the bathroom on their own)
  4. All campers must be able to ski all moderate or blue terrains with their skis matching (parallel) most of the time.
  5. All campers should be able to ski the top of "Joe Special" and the lower half of the "Colonel" in control, using turn shape rather than a wedge or snow plow for speed control.
* All campers will be evaluated on the morning of the first day. They will be placed in appropriate groups based on their skill levels.
